Protecting Your Teeth From The Very Start

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatments are particularly beneficial for children. As their adult teeth emerge, these treatments help combat tooth decay through remineralization. Acids from plaque and food can erode tooth enamel by leaching essential minerals from teeth. Fluoride treatment halts and reverses this process, strengthening tooth enamel and enhancing its resistance to decay.

Dental Sealants

The chewing surfaces of molars contain numerous grooves and fissures that can easily trap acidic plaque or food particles, making them challenging to clean. When children’s new molars emerge, dental sealants can be applied to seal out debris, protecting their natural teeth and preventing decay. Dental sealants create a protective barrier for these susceptible areas.

Why Opt For Sealants And Fluoride?

The Canadian Dental Association advocates for the judicious use of sealants on primary and permanent teeth, following a risk assessment and diagnosis by a dentist. According to the CDA, sealants are a crucial element of a comprehensive preventive program, which includes nutritional counselling, proper fluoride exposure, effective oral hygiene practices, and regular dental check-ups.

Reduce tooth sensitivity

Enamel is the outermost layer of a tooth, with dentin, pulp, and nerve lying beneath it. While dentin provides structural support, it cannot shield the tooth nerve from temperature changes or acidic and sticky foods. Thin or worn enamel leads to tooth sensitivity. Fluoride and sealants help maintain strong enamel, ensuring it can effectively protect the sensitive dentin from external factors.

Prevent and reverse decay

Worn enamel can deteriorate further, eventually leading to cavity formation. Besides tooth sensitivity, exposed dentin increases the risk of infection, which can be excruciating and might necessitate a root canal to save the tooth. Rebuilding enamel through fluoride treatment and protecting vulnerable areas from plaque buildup not only helps prevent decay but also strengthens teeth.

Save money in the long run

An ounce of prevention now is worth a pound of cure tomorrow. Fluoride and sealants are relatively inexpensive treatments that can prevent the need for more costly procedures that would be necessary if tooth decay is allowed to progress.

The Fluoridation And Sealant Process

Fluoride treatments are typically included in your child’s regular teeth cleaning and exam once a year. Sealants are applied as necessary, often after a new molar emerges or if the dentist identifies an issue on the biting surface of a tooth.

Fluoride treatment

Our fluoride treatment is more potent than over-the-counter options since it’s administered by medical professionals in our office. Typically, we apply fluoride using foam or gel in an upper and lower tray. The application process only takes a few minutes at the end of your teeth cleaning. We recommend avoiding eating or drinking for 30 minutes after treatment to maximize its benefits.

Dental Sealant application

Applying dental sealants is a straightforward and painless process. It does not involve drilling or the need for anesthesia. The dentist will first clean and dry the tooth thoroughly. Then, a mild acidic gel will be applied to slightly roughen the tooth’s surface, ensuring a strong bond with the sealant. After a few seconds, the gel will be rinsed off, and the tooth will be dried again. The sealant is then carefully applied and pressed into the grooves of the tooth. A special blue light is used to cure the sealant. Your bite should feel natural and comfortable after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your dentist or hygienist will recommend waiting 30 minutes after fluoride treatment before eating or drinking. This waiting period allows the fluoride to absorb into your tooth enamel and take effect.

Did you know that fluoride is actually a naturally occurring mineral? Small concentrations of fluoride are naturally present in some sources of drinking water. Scientists caught on to the benefits of fluoride when it was noticed that people who lived near fluorinated sources of water had less tooth decay. Since then, fluoride has been added to other sources of drinking water and to routine dental care regimens. Fluoride treatment has been safely preventing dental decay all over the world for generations.

Dental sealant is bonded to the biting surfaces of molars and acts as a shield to protect the vulnerable grooves and fissures of teeth from decay.

With proper oral hygiene and regular check-ups, dental sealants can last up to 10 years. It’s important to brush and floss regularly and avoid acidic foods and drinks, particularly before bed. If sealants become chipped or worn, a dentist or hygienist can easily repair them.
